If your relationship breaks down and you are unmarried, you should seek legal advice with regard to any property or assets. You may have thought that you were protected by the concept of a ‘common law’ husband/wife however this is not recognised in law.

Seperation Disputes for unmarried couples are dealt with in the Civil Court (unlike divorce, which is dealt with in the Family Court) and so the procedure and law is entirely different. Disputes generally concern the family home; whether it has to be sold and divided, or who can live there. You do not necessarily need to be one of the legal owners of the property to have a potential claim.
We also advise on cohabitation agreements entered into at the start of a relationship to help alleviate any issues should the relationship end.
