If your relationship breaks down and you are unmarried, you should seek legal advice with regard to any property or assets. You may have thought that you were protected by the concept of a ‘common law’ husband/wife however this is not recognised in law.
Meet the Family legal team
Seperation Disputes for unmarried couples are dealt with in the Civil Court (unlike divorce, which is dealt with in the Family Court) and so the procedure and law is entirely different. Disputes generally concern the family home; whether it has to be sold and divided, or who can live there. You do not necessarily need to be one of the legal owners of the property to have a potential claim.
We also advise on cohabitation agreements entered into at the start of a relationship to help alleviate any issues should the relationship end.

a week agoShentons have provided my son with brilliant support throughout a court case. From very first contact, we have had an amazing and highly professional defence. Call backs have always happened when scheduled, the lawyers have been clear, realistic and honest about outcomes. In court support has been reassuring and we felt that the very best defence was prepared and delivered. The barrister appointed was also outstanding and did a wonderful job on both court appearances. My son, the defendent, has learning disabilities/ autism. This was taken into consideration ideation throughout and he was treated with kindness and empathy. We are so grateful for the care and support that we have received. I cannot recommend Shentons more highly.Posted on Google

4 months agoI was referred to Shentons by a friend and have used Patrick Hunter in my dealings with my house, wills and POA. Patrick's service to me was unquestionable. He was professional, knowledgeable, conscientious and very kind. He kept me up to date every step of the way with my business. Nothing was to much trouble for him at all. I would not hesitate to use Patrick and the firm if I had any problems and I would definitely recommend him and the firm to my friends and family.Posted on Google

6 months agoChloe Jay helped my son when he got into bother. She was efficient, professional and knowledgable, but also very approachable. I felt able to ring and speak with her when needed, (obviously she asked my son if he was happy for me to speak on his bahalf). Thank you Chloe for making us feel supported in a difficult situation. I''d also like to mention Shae who was also very knowledgeable and approachable when I couldn't speak to Chloe. I would recommend Chloe to anyone for criminal legal representation.Posted on Google
